The moral demand is an ‘inescapable claim.’

It is, not an order, but a claim, for we can reject it and try to suppress the voice of conscience; we may even reduce its force considerably if we ignore our consciences long enough. Yet the claim is inescapable once it is fully understood, we cannot escape it however hard we try to disregard or reject it we know that we ought to obey it.
